Online Video Industry Forecast 2012: Edgecast Networks
[This sponsored article appeared in the December 2011/January 2012 issue of Streaming Media magazine.]
Next year will bring new challenges and opportunities in dealing with the evolution of formats and devices. This is particularly true as the mobile segment continues to grow in both its capabilities and adoption.
The challenge of supporting competing players, legacy versus HTTP-based formats, the use of adaptive multi-bitrate formats, and other changes will continue to be a significant source of confusion and investment.
We believe that CDNs and other cloud services will evolve and expand to make these challenges easier to address for media publishers and for streaming providers.
The launch of new cloud-based content and license repositories (e.g. iCloud, Ultraviolet, Google Music, Amazon) will drive increased consumption of media and increased pressure on delivery infrastructure.
This will mean continued pressure on service providers to adjust their strategies for building out network capacity - with CDNs playing an increasingly important role on both sides of that equation.
