Ooyala Offers Social Video Platform for Facebook

In late August, Miramax began streaming movie rentals on Facebook using an Ooyala-built app that offers social sharing features. Starting today, the OVP (online video platform) is offering the same service -- dubbed Ooyala Social -- to any content owner.

Ooyala Social lets broadcasters, distributors, or Hollywood studios rent or sell video content on Facebook. Enhanced features let viewers share clips with family and friends, hold live chats while viewing a video, discover other videos they might light, and watch videos across multiple devices.

Besides purchases and rentals, Ooyala Social supports subscriptions and advertising. Content owners can even use it to hold screenings, where content is unlocked after a specified number of people sign in.

Ooyala Social is a part of the OVP's Ooyala Everywhere offering, which enables video streaming across a variety of platforms and devices. This allows viewers to rent a movie on Facebook and begin viewing it there, but finish it on other devices, such as an iPad or Google TV.

"Facebook is becoming an increasingly important distribution channel for media companies," says Bismarck Lepe, president of products and co-founder of Ooyala. "Because of its 750 million monthly unique users, it offers a compelling complement to distributing video online via YouTube. We expect more and more companies to follow the lead of Warner Brothers, Miramax, and Netflix as they build direct-to-consumer video distribution models on Facebook."
