Sorenson Offers Cloud Encoding with Squeeze Server
Watch out Encoding.com, because Sorenson Media, maker of the Sorenson Squeeze line of encoding products, is now offering encoding in the cloud. At the opening day of the Streaming Media West 2010 conference, Sorenson announced the release of Sorenson Squeeze Server, which offers high-volume cloud-based video encoding.
The server is built on Amazon Web services, and relies on dedicated instances, so that high-volume users won't find the pipeline clogged by other users. The service is made to integrate with third-party infrastructure providers, and Sorenson offers a 99.9 percent uptime guarantee.
Customers of Sorenson Squeeze Server will get the same features found in Sorenson Squeeze, such as a wide selection of formats (including Flash, H.264, and WebM) and advanced pre-processing filters. Further, users can take advantage of developer APIs to make the server part of a publishing workflow.
"It's everything that you've come to trust about Sorenson Squeeze on the desktop, now running server-side," explains Eric Quanstrom, Sorenson's chief operating officer. "What's unique about Sorenson Server is that it's running in the cloud on dedicated instances, so there's no shared queue."
So should Encoding.com be worried? "Probably," Quanstrom says.
Additional features of Sorenson Squeeze Server include integration with Sorenson Media Preset Exchange (professionally created encoding presets), the use of Vid.vu (the company's recently launched video shortening service), and integration with the Sorenson 360 online video platform.
"For the enterprise, Web developers, and any other video professionals with high volume needs, Squeeze Server is the answer to the often painful prospect of tackling multiple encoding jobs--a cost-effective alternative to spending a fortune on data center-based hardware, software development, and ongoing maintenance," says Peter Csathy, Sorenson Media's chief executive officer.
Sorenson Squeeze Server is available now, with pricing starting at $499 per month for each dedicated server instance. Each subscription includes a complementary Sorenson360 account.
