ZiXi Announces Cloud-Based Live HD Streaming

ZiXi, a Waltham, Massachusetts-based company that specializes in streaming broadcast solutions, has announced a cloud-based service for delivering live high-definition video to any device, including tablets, smartphones, and computers. Called ZiXi Cloud Service (ZCS), it promises uninterrupted global delivery.

ZCS uses Amazon's web-based Elastic Computer Cloud (EC2) as a front-end, offering companies a personal scalable broadcast platform. ZiXi's service works with all standard encoders and streams live video in multiple formats, including HLS and RTMP, to content delivery networks (CDNs).

The service is meant to tackle the first-mile problem, where upstream bandwidth can be limited by the MSO, satellite, or telecommunications provider. It uses ZiXi's Video Transport Platform to eliminate buffering and packet loss, and offers real-time transcoding.

"Video quality is only as good as its weakest link; good long haul transmission quality cannot make up for poor first mile quality," says Israel Drori, CEO of ZiXi. "The ZiXi Cloud Service is an ideal solution for scaling live webcasts in pristine quality to a large number of viewers through CDNs and to mobile devices. With ZCS, millions of users get outstanding broadcast quality and reliability, every time, whether they're viewing on a PC, smartphone, or tablet device."

Charges are based on usage, so there are no upfront costs. ZiXi is currently showing the service at its booth at the IBC tradeshow in Amsterdam.
