Vimeo Goes Ultra High-Def: Lets Creators Offer 4K Video Downloads

While enthusiasm has been building for 4K video, so far there's been little 4K content to watch. Video sharing site Vimeo wants to change that and is jumping on the bandwagon early. Vimeo Pro members can now make video shot and uploaded in 4K available for download in 4K. Also, moviemakers using the Vimeo on Demand self-distribution platform are able to include a 4K download option to customers.

This isn't the first time Vimeo has offered 4K video. Earlier this year it offered a 4K download option for two video-on-demand (VOD) titles: season 3 of Video Game High School and A Film About Coffee. Those early efforts were a success, the company notes, and Vimeo is looking into 4K video streaming. It offered no guidance on when that might happen, saying it will offer UHD streaming when viewer bandwidth support is strong enough.

"With more and more people shooting in 4K we're excited to be releasing this feature to give them the same video quality they upload available as a download," says Andrew Pile, Vimeo's CTO. "We're beginning to see the first signs of large scale adoption of 4K in the market with 4K TVs starting to become affordable, along with the recently released Apple iMac with Retina 5K Display, and will continue building out our infrastructure to support, including launching streaming when it makes sense."
