Envivio Muse: New Video Compression Takes Traditional TV Quality "Up!" a Notch

Using New ‘Up!’ Compression Mode, Envivio Muse 4.0 Improves Video Quality, Saves Bandwidth, and Future-Proofs Operations

San Francisco(02 Apr 2015)

Taking traditional broadcast TV quality ‘Up!’ a notch, Envivio (NASDAQ: ENVI) today announced its latest version of Envivio Muse™ video compression software for video service providers worldwide.

With the advent of Envivio Muse 4.0, traditional live TV programs that are delivered to consumers over IPTV broadcast networks, cable and satellite  can now look better than ever before. Technically speaking, with its new ‘Up!’ compression mode, Muse 4.0 strives to perfect the latest video quality standards like MPEG-2 and H.264. Muse also improves the statistical rate control of variable bit-rate (VBR) data streams for broadcast video; allows for seamless video switching between sources at a scheduled time; and drastically reduces redundancy time.

Video distributors around the world will be able to take advantage of a range of new features.  Operators including Zon Multimedia, Chelikam Networks India, Millicom Paraguay, Slovak Telecom, Telefonica Chile, Vodafone New Zealand, and others already use Envivio Muse for their main TV program distribution in SD (Standard Definition) or HD (High Definition). The new Envivio Muse prepares operators for 4K Ultra HD TV and can save critical network bandwidth, streamline ad replacement or content black-out workflows and future proof investment toward a single facility to manage all multi-screen video operations.

Partners for Muse 4.0 include Intel, Dolby and all the major security vendors including Nagra and Verimatrix.

“This level of quality and depth of support is unique in the industry. In this new version of Muse, we focused our efforts on satellite and cable distribution. We reviewed every aspect of the solution from the ground up,” said Boris Felts, Envivio vice president, products and solutions.  Felts added, “Our new compression mode “Up!” applies more computing power towards video quality for today’s most demanding operations.”

“As a result, in recent independent customer trials, we have demonstrated that for the same quality, Muse 4.0 used up to 15 percent less bandwidth in H.264 than other well-known hardware encoders. Not only can this provide significant and immediate savings for video distributors who can leverage their existing transponders to carry more channels than before, it also can bring continuous quality enhancements, give them future compatibility with HEVC and the capacity to manage all screens under one head-end,” he added.

Specific Upgrades to Envivio Muse in version 4.0 include:

  • Video compression and preprocessing improvements in MPEG-2, AVC and HEVC with:
    • “Up!” a new mode allowing a better control over some of the advanced video parameters to attain higher video quality;
    • Improved preprocessing spatial filters;
    • A new spatio-temporal complexity analysis module to adjust the encoding parameters in real-time; and
    • Specific treatment for static area

The improvements bring 10 percent video quality improvements on average and up to 25 percent for some sequences.

  • Specific enhancements brought for the operations:
    • Live stream switching: seamless video switching between sources at a scheduled time. Distributors can now streamline their ad replacement or content black-out workflows; and
    • Fast redundancy: redundancy times between failures have been drastically reduced for the most critical applications.
