Mux Launches Instant Per-Title Encoding, Improving Video Quality For Everyone

San Francisco, CA(17 Apr 2018)

Mux, the video infrastructure company behind Mux Data and Mux Video, today announced Instant Per-Title Encoding, an AI-based approach to video encoding that can reduce video file sizes by 30% and improve video quality by 15%, at a 20x lower cost than other approaches.

By harnessing the power of neural networks, Instant Per-Title Encoding is capable of creating individual encoding ladders for any video in milliseconds instead of hours, at no additional cost to Mux Video users. This means Mux Instant Per-Title Encoding is 20x cheaper and 1000x faster than other approaches to per-title encoding.

This speed is especially important to Mux Video, which uses just-in-time transcoding to publish videos in seconds. Traditional approaches to per-title encoding optimization, which typically take hours of processing time, were incompatible with fast publishing.

“Until now, the kind of video encoding that Netflix does has been out of reach for the rest of the world, due to cost and complexity,” said Daniel Levine, venture capitalist at Accel Partners. “Using machine learning to make per-title encoding scale for every video is exciting for everyone from small startups to large technology companies.”

Since video already comprises 70% of internet traffic, good video compression is becoming more and more important over time. And online video is projected to more than double by 2021.

"Per-title encoding is one of the most exciting advancements in video encoding over the last decade, and we are excited to offer the first per-title approach that takes seconds instead of hours,” said Jon Dahl, co-founder and CEO of Mux. “Watching video is the #1 thing people do online, and so video compression is important to basically every internet user.”

This optimization makes a difference for both publishers and consumers. For consumers, per-title encoding means better video quality, with less rebuffering and faster load times. For publishers, per-title encoding can improve viewer happiness and retention, while lowering costs in some cases. Since over 90% of online video viewers have abandoned video in the past due to poor performance, these improvements make a meaningful difference.

Mux Instant Per-Title Encoding is available this week as a part of Mux Video for select customers, and will be rolled out to everyone over the next two months.
