Peer5, a live streaming CDN that leverages WebRTC, now makes 1 server equal 20
Peer5, a California based company and a leading innovator in live content delivery is making it scalable, cost effective and user friendly for Peer5 customers to deliver live content to the masses.
PALO ALTO, Calif. (17 Jun 2015)
Today Peer5 launched the first WebRTC based Live CDN that enables scalable, cost effective live video streaming for video publishers. Live streaming video is exploding, but the underlying technology has not caught up yet. This situation has created a suboptimal user experience and increased costs for the content providers. The new Peer5 platform is built to solve these problems. As content continues to rapidly expand, the problem becomes more obvious. With Peer5’s unique hybrid P2P/HTTP architecture approach, efficiency actually increases as consumption of live streaming scales.
“We are thrilled that clients already see huge value in savings and user experience when employing our technology“, said Hadar Weiss, CEO and co-founder, Peer5. “We made sure to build the platform so that anyone who broadcasts livestream video could easily set it up with a simple 3 steps onboarding.”
Peer5 is using new technologies, including WebRTC, which make it possible to address these challenges like never before. Today, users browsers can interact with each other in a new way, both in real-time and in-browser making it secure and safe. This is potentially vital for large live stream publishers like NBA.com, BBC.com, Twitch, Periscope by Twitter, Livestream, Ustream and others who care about protecting their brand and their audiences when delivering content in a safe and secure way without any invasive plugins or software.
About the technology
The hybrid Peer5 platform, built on top of these technologies, uses both HTTP and P2P mesh networks to optimize content delivery and improve user experience. The mesh network and P2P offloading system reduces bandwidth usage and is saving content providers money while increasing their capacity.
By using WebRTC and connecting to video players, Peer5 adds a peer-to-peer delivery layer on top of the HTTP layer. This hybrid approach enables an efficient, reliable and scalable video delivery, while improving user experience. Whether it’s on top of a standard CDN or in front of an origin server, Peer5 will offload up to 95% of the bandwidth (making each original server equal 20). The integration is easy - one line of code for the website, and seamless (no-install) experience for the end user.
“We see cases where one publisher, that broadcasts a live stream with a bitrate of 1mbps, owning 6 origin servers each capable of 500mbps upstream, is limited to 3,000 concurrent viewers. With Peer5’s technology we manage to make them reach 40,000 concurrent viewers at peak!“ said Shachar Zohar, Peer5 CTO and co-founder.
“Peer5 is innovating and changing the way content is delivered over the internet. Their unique approach to content delivery can make live streaming work even better when reaching peak times and at scale…,” said Jack Levin, Ambrella’s CEO who is an early investor/advisor to Peer5 and was the first networking engineer at Google.
