Flumotion wins ‘Best Streaming Innovation’ award for simplifying companies’ access to streaming

Flumotion Streaming Software is a unique product worldwide and the new e-shop enables clients to tailor the software to their technological and financial needs

Barcelona (October 23, 2009) -

Flumotion Streaming Software is the winner in the category of ‘Best Streaming Innovation' at this year's ‘Oscars of Streaming', gaining an impressive majority in its category. This win rewards 24 months of efforts to develop a technology that simplifies access to the world of streaming. The bundle of streaming features is unique worldwide and ensures that the groundbreaking technology of Flumotion is changing the industry, as have last year's winners YouTube, Adobe Media Player and AppleTV.

Streaming Media European Readers' Choice Awards is an industry leading event that highlights the emerging and most ground breaking products and services within the streaming industry. This year over 5,500 votes were cast by 2,700 readers amongst 200 nominated products such as Spotify and Dailymotion.

Nielsen reports that the time spent viewing online videos has grown by 24.8% compared to last year. The average user currently spends three hours per month watching video on the Internet, as it offers a more engaging experience as well as a broader selection of multimedia content, as extensive and varied as the internet itself. For businesses streaming online video is becoming a requirement, just as having a website was in the late 90s, and now in the late 00s businesses are starting to take note of video streaming as a new communication engine.

As a result of the success of online video different audiovisual formats are appearing in the internet landscape, each promising to be better than the others. Broadcasters have been confronted with the difficult decision of selecting the most suitable format for their business. This scenario was the driving motive for Flumotion when deciding to invest in the development of a multi-format software, which allows companies to stream all formats from a single server, both live and on demand. In order to make streaming a commodity it is essential to offer an end-to-end solution, allowing clients to cover the entire streaming process from encoding the video or audio signal to streaming it, as well as including the licenses of all third party codecs.  Flumotion Streaming Software is the only product worldwide that offers this unique combination of features and licenses.

Another important aspect of lowering the barriers of entry to streaming for any business is to create an easy and customized way to purchase and update the software. The new e-shop was designed to adapt the software to any technical or financial needs the client may have. The "Configurator" tool guides the buyer through a visual interface, where he can select only the features he wants and also decide whether he wants to pay a one-time fee or a monthly subscription as low as 39.97€. Any feature as well as new emergent formats can be purchased separately, keeping the software always up to date with the latest technology and the client's streaming needs.

The new software is an ideal out-of-the-box solution for TV and radio stations and online video portals, who want to stream content from their own machines.  In just a day content can be uploaded and streamed to 1,000 simultaneous users, visualizing a 500 Kbps video or to 7,600 users, listening to 64 Kbps audio at the same time.

The multi-format software of Flumotion has also been the core of the successful Flumotion Streaming Platform, which is delivering the content streams for broadcasters like Antena 3, COPE and RTVE to millions of viewers. Flumotion's partnerships with key telecommunication companies such as NTT Europe Online, Telefónica and British Telecom ensure optimal performance for clients with high traffic volumes. Furthermore Flumotion also enables telcos or network providers worldwide to create their own large scale streaming platforms based on Flumotion's cost effective and end-to-end streaming technology.
