Political Video Ads To Debut At UK General Election

London (October 30, 2009) -

For the first time UK political parties can use TV-like adverts in their election campaign, thanks to services on offer from Tremor Media – the world’s largest online video ad network.

Under the Communications Act 2003, political parties are prohibited from advertising on television and radio, thus excluding them from running broadcast ads. Tremor Media will for the first time, enable parties to use TV-style adverts to get their messages across to voters via engaging, targeted video ads which are measurably better than TV.

Tremor Media’s UK Managing Director Adrian Lacey said, “Until now, the ban on political broadcast advertising has limited parties to print, ambient and outdoor media, which are un-engaging and easy to ignore compared to online video advertising. A far more effective way to engage voters is through pre or post-roll online advertising, where a short video ad is played before, during or after desirable video content.

“Video and the web was utilised to great effect by both camps in the US presidential campaign last year, showing that online video ads had finally come of age. Tremor Media leads the way in this form of advertising, with a network that reaches 84 per cent of the internet: a bigger audience than any other video ad network. Since our launch in the UK last year we have seen more professional video content being produced, distributed and consumed and an ever increasing number of brand advertisers benefiting from the use of pre-roll video ad formats. As younger TV audiences migrate to spending more time online, video is one of the most powerful, persuasive and cost-effective ways to communicate with voters, many of which will be first-time voters.”

Political parties can take advantage of Tremor Media’s unique suite of in-stream video ad formats including vChoice, which plays a short video clip before inviting the viewer to click through to a party’s web site, microsites, social media, YouTube channel or any other part of their digital election campaign. These formats generate double the level of viewer engagement compared to standard pre-roll ads.

Tremor Media’s position as the world’s biggest online video ad network enables political parties to use the company’s unrivalled reach to target UK voters, while its ground-breaking technology makes it easy for parties to target particular demographics through a wide range of professional video content.

Lacey concluded: “Let’s face it, the public are crying out for something more engaging than traditional party political broadcasts. Our online video advertising isn’t just a TV ad online – it gives the parties the ability to provide truly interactive ads, where viewers can click through to take part in a wider conversation, whether it’s on the parties’ website or social media. Politicians are always talking about engaging and listening to the electorate; now, they finally have the technology to make it happen.”
