Streaming Media Producer contributing editor Shawn Lam and Canon Technical Adviser Chuck Westfall met at NAB 2014 to discuss Canon's recently introduced EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM Extender 1.4X Lens and how it's positioned in the market.
"We'd really been hearing a lot from our market about having an L series professional telephoto zoom lens that would be suitable for a wide variety of applications," Westfall says, "but primarily for sports photography and videography. And we found that the 200-400mm range was just about ideal, but having an extender with that lens would extend the versatility and capability of it immensely. So rather than force photographers to take the camera body off to attach the extender, we decided to build the extender right in and make it very easy to operate with a little switch. It was an immense technical challenge to make this lens durable enough to stand up to the type of abuse that we expect it to be exposed to" by the sports and wildlife shooters that Canon expects to adopt the lens.
