Video Review: Movo WMX-2 Duo Wireless Mic System

Marc Franklin discusses the Movo WMX-2 Duo, a dual-transmitter, single-receiver digital wireless microphone system with compact design, multifunction case that also serves as a charging station, and built-in microphones on the transmitters, but reliability issues that arose in testing.

In this review, we are going to look at the new Movo WMX-2 Duo, a dual-transmitter, single-receiver digital wireless microphone system with compact design, multifunction case that also serves as a charging station, and built-in microphones on the transmitters. I have been looking at for actually about a year and a half. It is a dual-transmitter, single-receiver digital wireless microphone system. There have been a lot of small compact digital wireless systems that have been coming out lately, and the ones I've tried I did not like at all, including Movo's first version. The WMX-1 picked up lots and lots of peripheral noise, so I was very interested to try this one out, especially having everything in one box.

In extensive testing at various locations including NAB, I experienced reliability issues with the system, including audio dropouts in environments with many digital signals and Wi-Fi. Despite good sound quality when it works, I can't recommend the Movo WMX-2 Duo for professional work due to its unpredictability. I suggest opting for more reliable brands like Sennheiser or Audio-Technica for critical tasks.

If issues arise with the video you capture, high-quality audio will go a long way to compensate for it. Viewers will often tolerate subpar video, but no one in the world will watch video with absent or poor audio. My advice to any streaming producer is to get the best audio setup you can afford for your video rig. It's always worth the investment.
