Blackmagic ATEM 2 M/E Production Switcher Drives Live Production at New Hope Oahu

New Hope Oahu relies on Blackmagic's ATEM 2 M/E Production Switcher and Broadcast Panel, Blackmagic Audio Monitor and a host of additional products to help broadcast services to more than 12,000 in-person and online attendees

Blackmagic Design today announced that New Hope Oahu, one of the largest churches in Hawaii and one of the fastest growing in the U.S., is using Blackmagic Design as the backbone of its live production and A/V setup at its main Honolulu facility. New Hope Oahu relies on Blackmagic’s ATEM 2 M/E Production Switcher and Broadcast Panel, Blackmagic Audio Monitor and a host of additional products to help broadcast services to more than 12,000 in person and online attendees.

With 31 locations in Hawaii, seven in mainland U.S. and 14 international ones, New Hope Oahu has amassed a huge following both locally and around the world. The church uses the ATEM 2 M/E Production Switcher to broadcast five services every Sunday and a midweek service on Wednesdays to two screens on either side of the stage in the 1,200 person auditorium, an outside LED screen for the 500 person overflow area and via an online stream, which is also sent to monitors throughout the facility. The service is also simulcast to three satellite campuses throughout Hawaii. The Blackmagic Audio Monitor allows the broadcast video directors to selectively monitor between the live feeds and pre recorded playbacks that need to be cued.

“Blackmagic let us streamline and clean up a lot of the clutter from patch bays, bulky switcher units and allowed us to scale down the amount of equipment we actually need,” said Tim Savage, director of media & production, New Hope Oahu. “Before Blackmagic, when we were analog based, we had four 42 space rack units filled with different types of products for conversion, switching, patching, etc. Now with Blackmagic’s equipment, we have one custom built 32 space rack that holds everything and still has space left. It’s allowed us to become very mobile as everything can simply fold up and roll from location to location for events outside of the church.”

In addition to the ATEM 2 M/E Production Switcher and Blackmagic Audio Monitor, New Hope Oahu uses Blackmagic Design’s ATEM Television Studio live production switcher, Compact Videohub router and Videohub Smart Control and Master Control, HyperDeck Studio Pro SSD recorder, SmartScope Duo for scopes and monitoring, SmartView HD monitor, several UltraStudio and Intensity I/O devices, GPI Tally, Mini Converter Sync Generator, Mini Converter UpDownCross, 12 Mini Converters SDI to HDMI and numerous OpenGear Converters.

During the week, the Compact Videohub is used to route a playback loop of announcements, music and visitor information throughout screens in the building. But it’s during the weekend that New Hope Oahu’s live production and A/V workflow really comes to life. Eight cameras capture the service, with feeds being sent to the Compact VIdeohub along with feeds from two iMacs, one running ProPresenter for video playback and a second running ProPresenter for keys overlays for lyrics and message notes. An Apple TV is used for AirPlay screen sharing when needed, and a MacBook Pro is hooked up in case either of the two primary iMacs fail.

All computers are fed to the Compact Videohub via UltraStudio capture and playback devices, and the Compact Videohub sends feeds to the ATEM 2 M/E Production Switcher. The remainder of the router’s outputs add different sources for rooms, such as recording studios, green rooms, dressing rooms, the pastor’s office, accounting rooms and main tech booth, as well as routing the ATEM 2 M/E Production Switcher’s nine outputs back to other outputs. This allows for staff to access the ATEM’s multi view feature in different places and even use it as an input back to a live output on the switcher itself.

Rounding out the setup, a HyperDeck Studio Pro is used to record and playback the message portion of the service if a speaker cannot present at all five of the day’s live services, while a SmartView HD is used to monitor all of the sources with a SmartScope Duo used to monitor scopes. The ATEM Television Studio is used for events outside of the facility, such as water baptisms, church picnics or sporting events, and those events are recorded and played back during the day’s services.

“We always try to push the boundaries of what is possible for a live event, sometimes having to come up with new ways to do things,” said Tim. “At first, Blackmagic Design gave us a way to move to HD switching at a cost we could afford, but now the products’ flexibility allows us to create almost any workflow we can dream up.”
