Tutorial: Live-Switched Production with the Roland VR-50HD Multi-Format AV Mixer
Shawn Lam guides readers/viewers through a simple, powerful, and versatile live-switched production and streaming workflow with Roland's VR-50HD all-in-one multi-format AV mixer.
Roland VR-50HD Video Streaming
The first step in video streaming with the Roland VR-50HD with the USB output is to make sure that my USB 2.0 or my USB 3.0 video cable is connected (Figure 20, below). That connects to my webcast encoder, which in this case is my laptop. I'm using Adobe Flash Media Live Encoder for this tutorial, but you can use any type of webcast encoding software that's compatible with a USB Class streaming appliance. Those options include Wirecast, vMix, Ustream or Livestream Producer.

The most important thing when you're setting up these software components is that they recognize your camera. In Flash Media Live Encoder (Figure 21, below), I need to switch my video input from my webcam, which is currently selected, to the VR50-HD.

I'd rather have the Roland VR50-HD do the heavy lifting when it comes to down-converting the video output for my webcast encoding. I've selected 720p, so that my webcast encode4 doesn't need to do that, and can work on a 1:1 pixel scale.
The Roland VR-50HD switcher and streaming appliance truly is an all-in-one, audio and video mixing and streaming solution.
