Mr. Gatto is a partner with the law firm Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman in
Virginia, where he serves as National Section Leader for Intellectual
Property and is co-leader of the firm’s open source team. His practice
focuses on all aspects of intellectual property including patent,
trademark, copyright, trade secret, open source, and Internet law. His
areas of technical focus include computer software, information technology,
biotechnology and bioinformatics, personalized medicine, optics,
semiconductors, telecommunications, financial services, business
methods, and Internet-related and e-commerce inventions. Before joining
Pillsbury Winthrop, Mr. Gatto headed the local IP practice for Mintz Levin’s
Reston and Washington offices, and was co-chair of the firm-wide IP
Section. Prior to that, he co-founded and co-headed the National Patent
Practice and Northern Virginia Technology Practice of the largest
Virginia-based law firm. Mr. Gatto earned his J.D. from Georgetown
University Law Center in 1988 and a B.E. in Electrical Engineering (with a
Physics minor) from Manhattan College in 1984.
