Dr. Wang is a Primetime Engineering Emmy Award winner and one of the world’s most cited (~50,000) authors for his outstanding contributions to the field of visual perception-based image quality assessment, processing and optimization. His groundbreaking work on Structural Similarity (SSIM) video quality assessment algorithm created a paradigm change in the imaging field and has been used for video quality assurance throughout the global media delivery industry, directly affecting millions of viewers daily. Dr. Wang is a Fellow of the IEEE, Canadian Academy of Engineering and the Royal Society of Canada. He received numerous prestigious awards in academia, including the 2009 Best Paper Award and the 2017 Sustained Impact Paper Award from the IEEE Signal Processing Society. His work led to the creation of the American Society of Cinematographers technical working group that focuses on 4K/HDR/WCG evaluation. Dr. Wang is a Professor and Canada Research Chair at the University of Waterloo, where he is directing a world leading research lab working on a wide spectrum of problems on multimedia quality-of-experience and multimedia communications. Dr. Wang co-founded SSIMWAVE Inc., for which he currently holds the title of Chief Science Officer.
