Garrard R. Beeney is co-head of Sullivan & Cromwell’s Intellectual Property and Technology Group. He handles IP matters before the U.S. Supreme Court, the International Trade Commission, the U.S. Patent Trademark Office, federal district and appellate courts, and arbitration forums. He also regularly advises on non-U.S. matters, particularly in the European Community. Mr. Beeney has been inducted as a fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers and has been described by Intellectual Asset Management as “one of the best trial lawyers on the planet.” Recent trial results in IP matters have brought his clients judgments of $960 million, $600 million, $260 million and defense wins over claims in similar amounts. Mr. Beeney also has represented clients before U.S. and European competition law authorities, particularly on issues at the intersection of intellectual property and competition laws. He has assisted clients in the formation of dozens of patent pools, and regularly represents the world’s leading patent pool administrators, advising on and litigating issues such as FRAND licensing, patent damages, and other forms of monetization. Mr. Beeney is a frequent speaker at IP, antitrust and legal forums and often contributes thought leadership pieces, particularly in the area of standard essential patents, patent pools, and world-wide licensing.
