Adobe Creative Suite 5: What's in it for Video?
Adobe launched Creative Suite 5 today, and you've probably already read about the new Photoshop tools, such as the truly jaw-dropping Content Aware Fill. But what does the suite bring to video professionals? Here's a list of the major new features in Premiere Pro CS5:
Mercury Playback Engine
Premiere Pro CS5 is 64-bit only and the Mercury Playback Engine delivers the 64-bit, GPU-accelerated, multicore-enabled support that powers it all. Edit HD footage in realtime without having to render it or lower its resolution. Open projects faster, scrub through HD footage, and work with long-form content without waiting. It even lets you do more with multitasking: it uses the GPU to accelerate effects, rendering, and other processor-intensive tasks so your system's CPU is free to handle background tasks.
Expanded Native Tapeless Workflows
Premiere now offers native format support for Sony XDCAM HD 50, Panasonic AVCCAM, DPX, and AVC-Intra. Native support for Red R3D files has been enhanced, and native support for video shot with Canon, Nikon, and other DSLR cameras has been added.
Open Workflows with Apple and Avid
Not all of your colleagues use Creative Suite, and sometime you're going to have to exchange files with Apple and Avid users. This version lets you share projects and assets between Premiere Pro and Final Cut Pro or Premiere Pro and Avid NLEs such as Media Composer. That lets you share files and timelines without conversion or rendering, preserving commonly used effects and transitions.
Faster Editing with Metadata
With Premiere Pro CS5, metadata can be created automatically and supplemented manually at any stage of production. For example, use Adobe Story, a new CS Live online service, to capture script information as metadata, and use OnLocation to capture all the data coming from the camera.
Tell Your Tale with Adobe Story
This new CS Live Service for scriptwriting (available separately) is made to streamline the flow of script data into your video's production. Think of it as a catalyst for turning screenplays into finished media. Use it to collaboratively write and edit scripts with others, online or offline. When you import your footage into Premiere Pro, you can synchronize your Adobe Story script to that footage, letting you create rough cuts based on the dialogue transcript. If you register before April 30, 2011, you'll get 12 months of CS Live free.
Premiere Pro CS5 is available in the Production Premium and Master Collection versions of the suite, or as a standalone product.
