Fraunhofer IIS-A Audio & Multimedia - a portrait
In the field of high quality low bit-rate audio coding, Fraunhofer IIS-A is the leader among the international research labs. Fraunhofer IIS-A has been the main developer of the most advanced audio coding schemes, like MPEG Layer-3 (http://www.iis.fhg.de/amm/techinf/layer3/index.html) and MPEG-2 AAC (
http://www.iis.fhg.de/amm/techinf/aac/index.html)(Advanced Audio Coding). Fraunhofer IIS-A plays a major role in the ongoing work for the MPEG-4 (http://www.iis.fhg.de/amm/techinf/mpeg4/index.html) standardization process and contributes to many other standards bodies as well, like ITU-R TG10/4, ITU-R WP10C, AES, MPEG-4 Intellectual Property Management & Protection (http://www.iis.fhg.de/amm/techinf/ipmp/index.html), and others.
Video activities are another corner-stone for multimedia competence at Fraunhofer IIS-A complementing the audio expertise. A focus of work is the combination of high quality audio coding with small-sized video using the H.263 coding scheme (http://www.iis.fhg.de/amm/techinf/video/index.html). The experience gathered with this standard is also the basis for H.263+ and future MPEG-4 video coding activities.Fraunhofer IIS-A Audio & Multimedia offers support for: Real-time know-how for various DSP architectures / Advanced C sources for MPEG Layer-3 and MPEG-2 AAC / Support for MPEG Layer-3 and MPEG-2 AAC implementations. e.g. by training-on-the-job lessons / Development of prototype hardware / Development of special features for your application (e.g. error protection, ancillary data processing, channel interfacing, watermarking) / Development of multimedia protection tools to address copyright issues / Development of measurement systems for digital audio coding algorithms
