Learn the Wrong and Right Ways to Pick Video Management Systems
Video industry conferences are great places to learn about video management technology, but don't fall in love. That was the advice of Jarrod Gingras, senior analyst and managing director for Real Story Group, speaking at the recent Streaming Media West conference in Huntington Beach, California. While he offered attendees tips on the right ways to pick a video management system, he first looked at the wrong way companies go about it.
"We put it down into five different buckets of the way that enterprises traditionally go about selecting technology," Gingras said. "Number one: This is what we like to call 'blind love.' I like to say this happens a lot at conferences like this. You come here with a particular challenge in mind. You might go out to the vendor booths over there and you might sit in on some demos. You know what, those demos always look really good. They always say, 'This is exactly what we need. We need to go back and get this.' Without doing your homework, you fall in love with one particular product, but it maybe had a really good salesperson, and maybe it's just not the right product at the end of the day."
The second method will test a person's patience with too much paper.
"Number two is what we call 'happiness is a warm set of binders,' Gingras continued. "Has anyone gone through an RFP process before where you put together this laundry list of checklist requirements and you put it out on the street and say, 'Hey, respond to my RFP'? What you get back looks a little something like this. It's a lot of work that was done by the most junior person at the vendor who just cut-and-pasted what he did the last time he responded to an RFP, and they send you back this huge document you're supposed to slog through and make sense of the key differences between the vendors that send all of these back."
