Soft Porn, Hard Cash (cont.)
Which of those corresponds to your business model?
Danni's Hard Drive is different in that we let people sort of hang around the free areas and not sign up. We don't encourage them to leave. We encourage them to come back, which can slowly build a brand and let people get used to the site before they subscribe. So it's more of a brand building philosophy than just traffic generating. You get a very good sense of what it will be like. And those people that are going to really stick with you and be a member for a long time, they'll get around to it eventually; if they liked the content enough, they'll subscribe.
What other factors are important in growing an audience?
We create a lot of events to build excitement. For instance, the Boob Bowl, the live event. It builds a lot of excitement around the event, but the truth is that most people don't tune in to see the live events. They'll tune in when it's convenient for them. But the fact that you do live events sometimes gets people excited, it makes them want to be a part of it, even if they're not going to tune in and watch it live. It's not a static site where nothing happens.
And how often do you think your site needs to be updated to keep it from seeming static?
Every day. Every single day. The Model of the Day feature gets updated 365 days a year. We have a news feature that gets updated five days a week and then every other weekend. There are at least two or three other pieces of content that go up each day.
You say the Internet is all about narrowcasting. Do you think large content aggregators would be interested in appropriating adult content to appeal to certain niches, themselves?
Oh, well, I know Yahoo! had about 12 people at the adult Internet show last month. I don't know. No one's approached us. Actually, I shouldn't say that. We have been approached by a lot of people. But in the end they always get shy about it and change their minds.
