The 2011 Streaming Media Readers' Choice Awards Finalists
The annual Streaming Media Readers' Choice Awards promises nothing except surprises, and 2011 is no different. In the list of finalists below—the top three vote-getters in each category—you'll see both familiar names and new faces, reflecting the constantly shifting online video landscape.
A bit about the awards process: Each year, we ask our readers and writers, as well as vendors in the online video space, to submit their nominations in multiple categories—categories we keep purposely broad, because of the continuously changing boundaries between product and service types. Once those nominations are in, we post them and open the awards for voting. We list the top three vote-getters in each category here as finalists, and we announce the winners at Streaming Media West in Los Angeles.
This year, we had 269 nominees in our 20 categories, and more than 6,000 people cast their votes. Clearly, some vendors ran proactive "get out the vote" campaigns, but we vet all the votes by sending out a confirmation email to each voter with a link that must be clicked in order for those votes to count. If there's no click, we discard the vote in order to get rid of any votes that came from "dummy" email addresses.
And each year, we get a few people complaining that the Readers' Choice Awards is "nothing but a popularity contest." We don't deny that; in fact, that's precisely the point of the awards: to provide a sense of what companies are making the biggest waves with their customers and the online video market in general.
We'll be announcing the winners at a special luncheon at Streaming Media West on November 9, and we'll post them on StreamingMedia.com on Thursday, November 10 and in the December/January issue of Streaming Media magazine. Thank you to our Diamond Sponsor, Haivision; our Platinum Sponsors Digital Rapids, Highwinds, ViewCast, and Wowza; and our Gold Sponsor, Telestream.
