Time Warner Prioritizes Linear Over On-Demand, Pushes Envelope

TV Everywhere was a major topic at the recent Streaming Media East conference in New York City, and Time Warner Cable shared its strategies for providing streaming access with attendees. First off, DLNA (the Digital Living Network Alliance) interoperability is crucial at Time Warner.

"Time Warner Cable has committed two different ways of delighting our customers with streaming media. The first one is through DLNA. We have adopted DLNA as a promoting member, and we have implemented DLNA in our lease model set-top box for our multi-room DVR product," said Eric Hybertson, director of rendering devices for Time Warner Cable. "The second one we've invested is also more traditional TV Everywhere. We have deployed our TWC TV application on various mobile platforms and portable platforms, and that is a more traditional streaming media from cloud to ground, so to speak."

While on-demand content has been a big part of TV Everywhere rollouts, Time Warner Cable sees linear access as the more forward-thinking strategy.

"We prioritize linear over on-demand just to push the envelope. Not necessarily because it was more important one way or the other. It pushed the envelope and we still see linear TV as still one of the most compelling applications in television there remains to be," Hybertson added. "As we take a look at what technologies to apply and what policies to apply going forward, it is generally to enhance the experience and help connect these experiences between a portable device and what's in the home and also what's out of the home, enabling our customers to access that content whenever they want, wherever they want on their terms."
