Vubiquity: The Two Unstoppable Advantages of TV Everywhere
While over-the-top video services are gaining momentum, cable and satellite companies continue to build up TV Everywhere, their own online streaming option. TVE has been a slow starter, but it has two big advantages says Doug Sylvester, president of video services company Vubiquity, speaking at the recent Streaming Media West conference.
"There are a couple of advantages that pay TV operators have," Sylvester explained. "First is exclusive content. So you've got the live programming, which continues to show up as very important to consumers—sports and news. The second part of exclusive content is you've got the highest value, the most impactful TV programming first. As TV programing gets increasingly windowed, that first access becomes an incredibly valuable position. That TV show that maybe is your favorite show might end up on Hulu and then Netflix or Amazon and other platforms down the road, but the first place that it appears is in your pay TV service."
It's up to TVE providers to make the most of those advantages and promote them to consumers.
"You have to make your live TV experience great. It has to be a great video service: HD, with a guide and navigation to help you find what you're looking for," Sylvester said. "The second is you have to give consumers access in the most convenient way. The first piece of that is TV Everywhere, so allowing viewing on multiple devices and the environment that you want and the location that you want. The second is a deep, deep catalog of that programming on-demand."
