DVEO: 2016 Online Video Industry Predictions
Given that technological innovation and adoption is increasing exponentially, it is not rocket science to predict that 4K video and H.265 will be in the mainstream sooner than most forecasters predict. The enabling technologies are all present: We now have 4K cameras, 4K TVs and monitors, and H.265 codecs are available. Mobile consumer devices are increasingly H.265-capable too. Additionally, all the large IP infrastructure companies are racing to introduce 25-50Mbps pipes to our homes.
Who will be the beneficiaries? Once again the "fleet of foot" will make early gains. Small companies like DVEO, which sport really agile development teams, tend to be quick out of the starting gate. Later on, larger companies with cash to burn "gobble up" some of those fast-off-the-mark companies. This happened recently to Envivio and Elemental, which were true pioneers in H.264 encoding and transcoding for multiplatform delivery.
Ultimately consumers will benefit from the highest-quality video services that few thought feasible or even possible just a few years ago. 4K video is extremely compelling and can be addictive. Once you see it, you never want to go back. The same phenomenon happened with color TV and HDTV. Once the technology was commercially available, consumers were willing to spend unusually large portions of their income. This is not irrational, since humans are built for visual storytelling and video has become our most powerful vehicle for communicating cultural values and beliefs.
DVEO will continue to contribute to this development through its relentless innovation that has characterized the company for the past 15 years. We are dedicated folks focused on the pioneering ethos. We are not driven by the dollars falling on us by entering new markets. We are willing to create the new products and happy to reap the rewards later.
