Limelight: 2015 Online Video Industry Prediction
The world of video is changing rapidly—not only are large content providers like HBO, Dreamworks, and Technicolor reaching out direct to consumers; but virtually every enterprise is launching an online video presence of some sort. As consumers transition their content consumption to digital, traditional television is being turned on its head. OTT is finally here.
But consumers are bringing with them their expectations for a “television-like” broadcast-quality experience from online video. The many new, and incumbent, players jumping on the online streaming bandwagon must deal with a host of challenges—multi-device delivery, out-of-franchise audiences, and monetization to name a few—while providing buffer-free, always-on, error-free delivery of their content.
My prediction? You could call 2015 the “year of the CDN.” First, because content owners all need new infrastructure to provide a global television-like experience. Second, because leading CDNs are enhancing their basic delivery services with software that makes publishing and managing video easier. And third, because today’s business world is moving to the cloud. Content owners are finding they are often better served by offloading non-core activities, risks, and variable costs to a CDN purpose-built to deliver broadcast-quality video.
