Limelight Networks: 2016 Online Video Industry Predictions

Increasing live streaming of major events, higher adoption of over-the-top (OTT) content, and online video game downloads, as well as large global software updates, broke internet traffic records in 2015. The growing complexity in delivering broadcast-quality content to the masses creates a significant challenge in our industry. And in live streaming events, we’re starting to see companies push the boundaries and experiment in ways we haven’t seen before. A good example that was well-publicized was the Yahoo! internet-only delivery of the NFL game in London this fall. It was a first-time event for Yahoo! and the NFL, and as it was largely seen as a success, we’re likely to see more of that in the year ahead.

In addition, video on demand continues to grow. According to our second “The State of Online Video” research report published in December, more than 83 percent of consumers watch on-demand video. Adding to the challenge, content publishers must create multiple bitrates of the same file for video, and deliver it to diverse internet-connected devices, from a wide variety of manufacturers.

Content owners are finding they are often better served by offloading non-core activities, risks, and variable costs to a CDN built to deliver broadcast-quality video. Limelight delivers all types of digital content to any device, anywhere in the world. A large portion of the internet traffic   passes through our global network, and we have more egress capacity than a dozen pure-play startups combined. I think that 2016 will be an exciting year for even greater online video adoption and innovation, and we’re ready to help our customers scale to meet the demand and provide a  flawless end-user experience.
