Online Video Industry Executive Palmistry 2014
It seems like not a week goes by without another research firm publishing a report “proving” that online video is bound for continued growth. If you’re like me, I bet you shake your head and mutter, “No kidding.” Don’t get me wrong; data-driven research is valuable, especially for those on Wall Street who think that Netflix opening in Holland is news. But for those of us who live and breathe streaming media, that’s like calling attention to the fact that a car dealership sold another car. I should hope they did.
If you are a regular reader of our magazine, your hands are calloused. But as a seasoned buyer of online video technology and services, you still need to figure out what finger you need to put a ring on in 2014.
Even if it’s the shiny buttons represented on the palm-reading diagram that entice you, you’re still looking for data to back up your hunches. It’s not just the data that says more people are watching on tablets than they did yesterday. Nor is it data from the reports some vendors are publishing about their customers’ usage that they’re trying to pass off as representative of the entire market. To make truly informed purchasing decisions, you need to see data collected from the industry’s hydra: content producers, publishers, and carriers. There’s only one place where you’ll find all three squarely focused, and that’s Streaming Media. That’s why in 2014 you’ll see several new research reports published by Streaming Media and underwritten by serious industry vendors with your best interests in mind. Our research has a unique value proposition—it’s going to help you do your job better. That’s our job and our mission.
But let me pass the baton to these industry leaders who will tell you from their hands-on experience what to expect in 2014. Pay attention; they’re all pretty handy at creating solutions for our industry. Finger-pointing aside, 2013 has been hard enough to get a grip on, so we’ll just point you in the right direction for 2014. Bad puns? You caught me red-handed. I know; I’m a handful.
