63% of Consumers Aware of OTT Skinny Bundles: Digitalsmiths
Skinny bundles—groups of streaming channels that consumers can subscribe to for a small monthly fee—are a recent offering, and only 6 out of 10 adults in the U.S. and Canada know they're an option. That information comes from the Q3 2015 Pay TV and Online Video Trends Report issued by video metadata specialist Digitalsmiths. In the third quarter, 63.3 percent of those surveyed knew about skinny bundles, which include Hulu Plus, HBO Now, Sling TV, and CBS All Access. That figure shows a 5.8 percent quarter-over-quarter increase.
The report is an interesting read as it charts the slow erosion of the pay TV market. The percentage of people planning on cutting or changing their cable or satellite services continues to rise, while those planning on staying put dropped slightly. The report finds that 40.6 percent are paying more for pay TV than they did 12 months ago, while the percent of unsatisfied pay TV customers grew to 24 percent, up 2.5 percent over two years. High fees are the chief reason for dissatisfaction.
In the third quarter, 18.4 percent of pay TV customers decreased or removed services, a 2.3 percent year-over-year increase. Most of those either reduced their level of service or cut premium channels.
Digitalsmiths hired a third-party survey service to question 3,153 adults in the U.S. and Canada. For more results, download the full report for free (registration required).
