Akamai Looks at the State of the Internet
Content delivery network Akamai is in a unique position to survey the health of the Internet in various locations given its global network of servers, and the company's quarterly State of the Internet report is a trove of useful information for registered users. The first quarter 2010 report is now available for download, and it provides interesting information about the fastest cities and average speed connections.
Akamai examined the average connection speeds in cities around the world, looking at those with at least 50,000 unique IP addresses connecting to Akamai, and found that rankings can change quickly. Last quarter's three top cities-Berkeley, California; Chapel Hill, North Carolina; and Stanford, Connecticut-all disappeared from the top 100 list. The last quarter's fourth place city, Masan, South Korea, is now the fastest. Asia dominates the list. Of the 12 U.S. cities that made the list, 7 are in California.
The report now measures the average maximum connection speeds in different countries, finding that South Korea, Hong Kong, and Japan had the globe's fastest speeds. South Korea's average maximum speed is 33Mbps. The U.S. placed eighth in the world, with an average maximum of 16Mbps.
Of U.S. states, Delaware offers the fastest average connection, while Alaska had the slowest (2.7Mbps). Akamai has made the charts from the report available for free download.
