Boxee Devices will Use Widevine Adaptive Streaming.
While the tech world is pondering the upcoming Google TV/Apple iTV battle that could play out at malls this holiday season, news comes that Boxee consumer electronics devices will use Widevine's adaptive streaming for content delivery.
The Boxee Box, Boxee's first television-connected consumer device, was announced at this year's CES and slated for a summer delivery. Later, the company announced that the product was delayed and would ship in November.
This announcement will bring Widevine's adaptive streaming, virtual DVD controls, and digital rights management tools to any devices running Boxee software.
"Our goal has always been to provide users with access to as much entertainment as possible," says Avner Ronen, Boxee's CEO and co-founder. "Partnering with Widevine will allow us to bring more movies and TV shows to Boxee in the best possible quality."
Widevine's technology is used to optimize media delivery over any network to any device. It's already used by Internet content services, as well as cable, satellite, and telecommunications companies.
"Currently the Widevine platform is available in over 250 million CE devices worldwide and we continue to widen our footprint in the global CE device market. This agreement with Boxee moves us closer to our goal of becoming the world's foremost provider of video optimization solutions and DRM," says Brian Baker, Widevine's CEO.
