Brightcove Debuts App Cloud, Platform for App Development
Aiming to unify the fractured world of apps, Brightcove unveiled its new App Cloud platform this morning. The platform will let developers create media-centric apps for Apple iOS and Google Android smartphones and tablets, allowing them to easily manage distribution, analytics, advertising, and content for a range of apps. App Cloud combines open HTML5 development with Brightcove's own cloud services.
The platform is able to compile both smartphone apps that can access native APIs and touch-based tablet Web experiences that can be seen by search engines. By creating both concurrently, companies are able to shave development costs.
Developers use HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, and the App Cloud SDK to create templates. Brightcove's cloud content services then provide access to material stored in content management systems, optimize streams, and track analytics. Brightcove also offers push services and centralized account administration.
"Delivering content apps across fragmented devices forces media publishers to choose between redundant one-off app development and cookie-cutter templates," says Jeremy Allaire, Brightcove's chairman and chief executive officer. "App Cloud offers a new alternative with a platform that significantly streamlines the development and management of custom content apps across devices. With App Cloud, Brightcove cloud content services offer unprecedented choice, control and efficiency for initiatives spanning online video, native apps and touch websites."
While App Cloud only creates iOS and Android apps for now, Allaire said that the platform will grow and eventually include connected TV apps, as well.
Along with the debut of App Cloud, Brightcove is renaming its online video platform as Brightcove Video Cloud.
App Cloud is currently in private beta and should be commercially available in the second half of this year.
