Brightcove Launches Version 5 of Online Video Platform

On the opening day of the 2010 Streaming Media West conference, Brightcove launched a major new version of its cloud-based online video platform. Brightcove 5 is a series of improvements, some of which are already available and some of which are coming in the next two months. This release comes 12 months after the release of Brightcove 4.

The improvements in this version are built around three themes: reaching more people in more places, driving more business value, and reducing cost by improving productivity.

To reach more people in more places, Brightcove users can now add their content to YouTube, by far the biggest online video destination, with just a click. More than that,, their videos stay in sync: if they update a video, the changes are automatically updated on the YouTube channel.

Brightcove also offers Apple HTTP streaming now, recognizing the importance of Apple’s iOS devices, and offers an enhanced mobile SDK. Developers will find the tools they need to create apps for both Apple and Android.

To drive more business value, the platform offers expanded analytics tools. Brightcove’s analytics module was a major component of the version 4 release, and now its gaining over a dozen reports, highlighting player metrics, top referral search terms, and granular geographic data. Brightcove is also offering analytics for HTML5, created in partnership with TubeMogul.

Content providers can deliver a more TV-like experience with new live HD multi-bitrate streaming, based on Akamai’s HD technology. It promises smooth playback for major live events. Viewers will be able to use DVR controls to rewind during the event.

Finally, to improve productivity the platform is offering smart players that use one embed code, but deliver both Flash and HTML5 video. Video upload has been greatly accelerated thanks to a partnership with Aspera (also a partner in today’s major announcement from Sorenson). Finally, Brightcove is creating an iPhone app that will let reporters in the field upload content for immediate viewing.

“Consumers today are surrounded by an increasingly fragmented landscape of devices and destinations, which present publishers with exciting new opportunities, as well as challenges,” says Jeremy Allaire, Brightcove’s chairman and chief executive officer. “Brightcove 5 helps remove the complexity of online video publishing and distribution across multiple devices and touch points, accelerating productivity and unlocking additional value.”

Brightcove has over 2,300 customers in over 50 countries. Brightcove 5 will be available in three different editions: Express, Pro, and Enterprise.
