Brightcove Offers Native iOS, Android Video Apps: Ends AppCloud
Taking a stand that the future of premium video on mobile is with native apps, not HTML5 players, Brightcove today announced software development kits (SDKs) for iOS and Android devices. At the same time, it announced that it was ending AppCloud, which is launched in May, 2011. Existing AppCloud customers have until June, 2014, to create other delivery options.
With its iOS and Android SDKs, Brightcove is integrating advertising, analytics, and digital rights management. The SDKs also integrate with third-party services including Adobe SiteCatalyst, Adobe Pass, Akamai Media Analytics, comScore Media Metrix, FreeWheel, Google DoubleClick for Publishers, Nielsen VideoCensus, and Google Widevine.
Brightcove created the SDKs to help publishers meet the challenge of delivering premium video to mobile devices while including advertising, analytics, and content protection, says Brightcove director of product management Phil Costa.
According to Brightcove, its premium media customers found that the hybrid app model provided by AppCloud didn't offer the kind of features they needed. With HTML5 video lacking features essential for premium content delivery, Brightcove decided that only a native development approach could provide the required functionality on mobile devices and pave the way for future mobile viewing experiences.
Brightcove's iOS and Android SDKs are available for free as of today to Brightcove Video Cloud Pro and Enterprise customers. The company will offer the SDKs as standalone products sometime in the future.
When Brightcove launched AppCloud, Jeremy Allaire, Brightcove's chairman and chief executive officer, said, "Delivering content apps across fragmented devices forces media publishers to choose between redundant one-off app development and cookie-cutter templates." For now, it seems cookie-cutter is winning.
