Brightcove Pushes HTML5 Video Forward with Monetization Plan
Online video platform Brightcove announced a monetization option for HTML5 video today, adding a crucial element that's so far been missing. Customers of Brightcove Video Cloud can take advantage of a suite of revenue options that work across all desktops and mobile devices.
Video Cloud now supports VAST-compliant pre-, mid-, and post-roll advertising with HTML5 video. Brightcove is also announcing a new HTML5 video player API that lets publishers dynamically create and change advertising policies, as well as HTML5 video plug-in support for FreeWheel, Google, Videoplaza, and YuMe ad servers.
In its announcement, Brightcove notes that smartphone viewing of ad-supported and rights-managed video content has nearly an eight times year-over-year growth rate, and that tablets are now the preferred method for streaming episodic videos. By adopting the Video Cloud solution, Brightcove says that publishers can be sure their videos will display correctly on all platforms and devices.
Brightcove says its HTML5 video ad offering is future-proof, as it will support new platforms and operating systems as they reach consumers. It notes, for example, that while Windows 8 doesn't support third-party plugins such as Flash, Video Cloud's abstraction layer means that its player works on the platform without extra development time.
