Cisco Creates Certifications for Online Video Professionals

Online video professionals have a new way to demonstrate their proficiency in their field or learn new skills: Cisco has created two video network specialist certifications, one for people new to the area and one for people broadening their skills from voice networking.

The CCNA (Cisco Certified Networks Associate) Video certification is the first career certification for video. It involves a three-day streamed video course, and then a five-day instructor-led course. Students can view the streamed section live or at their convenience. Cisco learning partners conduct the instructor-led section, which includes hands-on participation. This certification requires two exams: VIVND 200-001 after the first part (for the student to become a Cisco video network specialist) and ICOMM 640-461 (for the full video certification).

The Cisco Video NetworkSpecialist certification is targeted to voice professionals who have shifted from analog to IP delivery and are already familiar with digital networking. Those workers are increasingly being asked to handle video delivery, and this certification provides the needed skills. It requires a five-day instructor-led class with hands-on participation. At the end, students take the VIVND 200-001 for their certification.

Cisco created these certifications to meet market demands for video professionals. According to Tejas Vashi, director of product management for Cisco, the company consulted with IP video experts, partners, analysts, and industry associations to learn what's required of video professionals and to determine where the knowledge gaps are.

"We don't build a professional certification or a specialist certification unless there's a demand and a mature role in the industry," says Vashi.
