Comcast Debuts Online Streaming Service Xfinity Streampix
Adding one more option to its array of services, Comcast unveiled a streaming product today called Xfinity Streampix, available to customers later this week. The service will be included with some of Comcast's Xfinity triple-play packages and will sell for $4.99 per month for customers with other video services (it won't be available as a standalone product). Rather than a move to prevent cord-cutting, it seems purely designed to undercut Netflix (Netflix streaming service costs $7.99 per month).
Comcast hasn't said how many titles the service will have at launch, but noted that it has licensing deals with Disney-ABC, NBCUniversal, Sony Pictures, Warner Bros. Digital, and Cookie Jar Entertainment.
Content will consist of movies and past seasons of TV shows. TV shows will include "30 Rock," "Grey's Anatomy," "Heroes," and "Lost," while movies available will include Brokeback Mountain, Ocean's Eleven, When Harry Met Sally, and The Big Lebowski. If Comcast can't find a movie in the service more recent than 2005 to include in the press release, Netflix probably shouldn't lose any sleep just yet.
Streampix will let customers stream to their living room TVs, computers, and mobile devices. Comcast plans to add game console and Android device support "in the coming year."
