Dailymotion Hopes to Increase Monetization with New Player

Dailymotion's videos will soon have a new look, thanks to an updated player currently in beta. Viewers should appreciate the sleeker, borderless appearance, while advertisers will like the site's new ability to serve ads on embedded videos.

You can check out the new player on this page for the bandBad Lieutenant, led by Joy Division/New Order founder Bernard Sumner. You can also see it at the end of this article; notice that the controls only appear when the player is stopped or when you mouse over it.

The changes aren't just cosmetic, either. The player now offers one-touch embedding to Facebook and Twitter accounts. When viewers click the Export button, they get the option or sending a link, getting an embed code, or marking just the portion of the video that they want the recipient to view. Also, the player is more efficient now, using fewer system resources.

Tied to the player launch is a deal with Auditude that will allow Dailymotion to monetize embedded videos. A large percentage of views are from videos embedded on other sites, says Joy Marcus, U.S. general manager for Dailymotion, and the site previously had no way to serve ads to them.

Dailymotion's developers are making final tweaks to the player, which should launch in a few weeks.

The player isn't the only news at Dailymotion. The site recently signed an agreement with The Filter, Peter Gabriel's recommendation site, to deliver more tailored recommendations to Dailymotion's viewers.

"Dailymotion wants to change the online video environment. Working with The Filter we aim to help our users find the videos that interest them the most, while increasing dwell time, which is so vital to our advertisers," says Cedric Tournay, CEO of Dailymotion.
