Elemental Introduces Statmux for Efficient Multi-Codec Delivery

Just ahead of this year's NAB conference, Elemental Technologies has announced the release of Elemental Statmux, a new offering for today's demanding video workflows. Elemental calls it "the first software-based multi-codec, multi-resolution statistical multiplexer." With it, operators can save on bandwidth while streaming a mix of codecs within their workflows and networks. Doing so, Elemental says, will make it easier for operators to offer new linear and OTT services to customers.

“In the broadest sense, we are giving satellite and cable operators a super-efficient and very flexible way to handle all their video processing requirements in a single software defined video solution that is multi-codec, multi-resolution, multi-delivery (OTT, IPTV and cable/satellite) capable," says Aslam Khader, chief product officer for Elemental. "Elemental Statmux enables service providers to save 25 to 30 percent of channel bandwidth by enabling them to distribute a set of multiplexed linear channels within a single video processing infrastructure. It’s a really tight, efficient and flexible solution that moves at the speed of software and the internet.”

The solution works for 4K delivery, Elemental says, as the company's Live encoders can input 4K or HD streams and create HEVC UHD and MPEG-2 or H.264 HD and SD streams in parallel. Operators can turn a single source into multiple resolution statmux outputs.

Statmux is already being used for linear delivery by TCC, a pay TV operator in Latin America. With it's help, TCC achieved a bandwidth savings of 15 to 20 percent.

Elemental is also introducing the latest version of Elemental Conductor, a management tool that lets pay TV operators oversee large-scale live workflows. New features let operators create bulk actions—stopping, starting, or editing hundreds of channels at once.
