Free Online Movies Available from Popcornflix—With Ads, That Is
"Online movies" and "free" rarely go together, but that's the idea behind Popcornflix.com, a streaming entertainment site that just launched in beta. The catch is that movies are ad-supported. Still, if Hulu can make people watch multiple ads per television show, that shouldn't be a deal-breaker.
Popcornflix.com doesn't have the premium content of Hulu, though. While it features several A-list names in its library of hundreds of films-such as Meryl Streep, Charlize Theron, Kristen Stewart, Melissa Leo, Alec Baldwin, and Anthony Hopkins-they're in movies few have heard of. The best-known movie on the site currently seems to be Super High Me, comedian Doug Benson's documentary on smoking marijuana.
As for the ads, each movie includes pre-roll, spot, and banner ads. The site is a service of Screen Media Ventures, LLC, and borrows from Screen Media's library of over 1,500 movies. Popcornflix.com plans to expand internationally this year, and to make its content available on set-top boxes, connected TVs, and connected DVD players. It also plans to grow its film library to over 1,000 titles by the end of the year.
"Popcornflix is one of the few legal, free to the viewer, digital platforms with a dedicated focus on streaming movies while delivering the highest quality digital resolution for the optimal viewing experience," says Gary Delfiner, senior vice president of digital distribution for Screen Media Ventures.
