Hulu Signs Deal with Univision for Spanish-language Programming

Hulu's CEO Jason Kilar penned a company blog post yesterday to highlight the site's growth and let viewers know about new content coming their way. Hulu has signed what Kilar described as "a significant licensing agreement" with Spanish-language television network Univision to license hundreds of hours of programming. Viewers will see content added over the next 90 days. Kilar said the agreement includes Spanish-language telenovelas, variety shows, comedies, and reality programs, but didn't disclose the price for the agreement or the exact number of hours Hulu is getting.

"The demand for Univision's content is tremendous and this will be the first time our most popular programming will be available on the Internet," said Tonia O'Connor, president of distribution sales and marketing for Univision Communications, in a written statement. "We are pleased to enter into this landmark agreement with a partner that shares our passion for super-serving all TV fans with their favorite shows in a rich and user-friendly environment."

Hulu is growing in both viewers and content available, wrote Kilar. Videos offered in Hulu grew 39 percent year-over-year, looking at the past 90 days, and videos offered in Hulu Plus grew by 106 percent in the same period.

Kilar also wrote that Hulu has seen an encouraging response to its expansion to Japan, and that Hulu Plus now has more than 1 million paid subscribers in the United States.

In August, Netflix signed a deal with Telemundo for 1,200 hours of content as part of its expansion to 43 countries in Central America, South America, and the Caribbean.
