Imagine Communications and EVS Partner to Advance Standards: IBC

Taking a role in helping broadcasters adopt new open standards while moving to software-based workflows, Imagine Communications announced at its IBC 2015 press conference that it is partnering with EVS to promote the adoption of the SMPTE 2022 and JPEG2000 (J2K) standards for live production, slow motion, and instant replay operations. By joining together to promote adoption, the two companies hope to allow customers to use a multi-vendor end-to-end workflow while migrating to next-generation technologies.

The joint adoption lets broadcasters preserve their baseband investments while saving money purchasing off-the-shelf switching equipment.

EVS managing director and CEO Muriel De Lathouwer joined Imagine CEO Charlie Vogt on stage to talk about the partnership. The idea was born at NAB 2015, she said, when the two chatted over wine, recognizing their similar backgrounds and goals in moving the broadcasting industry forward. Standards are one of the biggest challenges for the industry, Vogt said.

This announcement is only the beginning of a move to common standards. In an interview with StreamingMedia.com, Vogt said that he believes a consortium of Imagine and its peers will form in the next 90 days to advance IP standards. Vogt has meet with all but one of his major competitors, he says, and feels an announcement is near. A consortium will let Imagine and its peers compete on services, he says, and not on standards.

Imagine has spent $200 million in research and development in the last few years, Vogt said during the press conference, most of which has gone to next-generation technologies. Cloud workflows and distribution are becoming much more prevalent, he said, with some or all customer functions migrating to public or private clouds.

Imagine also announced that it is adding Landmark xG Open, an API-based solution, to its ad management solutions. Landmark xG Open lets media companies participate in programmatic ad exchanges.

Imagine has taken a multi-year option on the newly constructed Amtrium space in Hall 4 at IBC.
