LG Introduces IP Set-Top Boxes at Cable Show

Depending on who you ask, the future of video in the living room lies either in smart TVs that can deliver content without set-top boxes or connected devices or in really dumb TVs that are merely display conduits for whatever device or devices consumers want to use to access their content. At this week's Cable Show in Washington, D.C., television manufacturer LG is hedging its bets and trying to have it both ways, introducing IP set-top boxes and TV dongles.

According to Light Reading, LG is announcing two IP set-top boxes. The first works with the Google TV platform but also allows MSOs to deliver linear and VOD programming in addition to Google TV apps.

The second runs LG's NetCast television operating system and is DLNA compliant. Both boxes support whole-home DVR and gaming.

LG is also announcing two dongles, including an "Android Mini Box," which runs Jelly Bean and serves to get OTT content to televisions via Wi-Fi. Another dongle works exclusively with Miracast devices.

Finally, LG is introducing a 4K UltraHD gateway, perhaps an attempt to show off its cutting-edge capabilities, even though there are few current applications for such a device.
