Livestream Intros Beta of New Platform for Event Coverage
Livestream, already the live streamer of choice for many events (witness the many Occupy Wall Street and related streams, for example), today introduced the beta version of a new platform intended to bring a more immersive experience to live coverage.
Called the New Livestream, the platform lets users combine their live video stream with real-time photos, text, and video clips.
This new platform includes adaptive video quality, based on the connection speed and the computer's ability, with a maximum resolution of 720p. DVR functionality lets viewers jump back in the video stream. The platform also offers social tools and a personalized dashboard for mixing content.
The New Livestream is launching in a closed beta with one partner: the Volvo Ocean Race, a 39,000 nautical mile event that begins Saturday, October 29, 2011, in Alicante, Spain, and ends in July, 2012, in Galway, Ireland.
At the moment, Livestream is restricting new channels on the platform to approved partners. The company will open that up slightly in December, when it unveils tools for creating channels on the new platform, inviting selected event owners and existing partners to take part. The platform should be open to everyone for free or premium channels in April, 2012.
