MRG Forecasts Strong Growth in Global IPTV Market

A new report from MRG (Multimedia Research Group) predicts that the global IPTV market will grow to $49 billion (U.S.) in revenues by 2015. The research firm also sees IPTV providers growing to 113 million subscribers globally in the same time frame.

Multi-screen video devices will drive the increase, says MRG. Adults from 18- to 55-years-old are moving toward a mobile lifestyle, and increasing the home use of Wi-Fi.

Around the world, Europe will remain ahead of Asia in the number of IPTV subscribers in 2015. MRG cites regulatory confusion in Asia as the chief reason for the lag. By 2015, there will be at least 25 IPTV operators with over 1 million subscribers. Of those, nine will have over 3 million.

Despite the rise if IPTV, smart TVs (or connected TVs) aren't making a dent in set-top boxes yet. MRG says that's because TV vendors have been slow to get enough content rights to make their products attractive, and because consumers are slow to replace their televisions.
