Machinima Gets $35M Financing, Led by Google
Video network Machinima Inc. has been generating huge hits from its original gaming- and sci-fi-oriented online shows (the company touts 1.61 billion video views for April), and yesterday a payday came in the form of a $35 million funding round led by Google Inc. Redpoint Ventures and MK Capital also participated in the round.
Machinima will use the additional funding to boost content and global sales operations. It plans to spur international expansion and additional distribution strategies, as well as new product and technology initiatives. The aim, the company notes, is to develop a global brand for a new generation.
"With this latest round of funding, Machinima is well-positioned to make the next evolutionary step in the world of multi-channel video programming and distribution by expanding into original content, international territories, and new platforms and devices," says Allen DeBevoise, Machinima's chairman and CEO.
Machinima has raised $14.6 million in three previous funding rounds, led by MK Capital.
Machinima is consistently the third-most visited YouTube partner channel, following Vevo and Warner Music, according to comScore.
StreamingMedia.com got the inside story on one of Machinima's most popular shows, RCVR, in April, 2012. RCVR (pronounced "receiver") took home three International Academy of Web Television Awards in Las Vegas, Nevada, including Best Drama Web Series, Best Male Performance (Drama), and Best Cinematography.
