NASA Traffic Soars with Shuttle Launch

Traffic to NASA.gov spiked 75 percent last week as users went to the site for updates on the launch of space shuttle Endeavor.

Site traffic jumped to 567,000 unique visitors for the week ending April 22, according to Nielsen/NetRatings. Men accounted for 56 percent of the traffic. Surfers spent an average of five minutes on the site, with most users watching Real Player streams of the space crew's daily activities.

"NASA.gov is a refreshing change from the typical government Web site, incorporating multimedia and video streaming through NASA TV,'' said T.S. Kelly, director of Internet Media Strategies, NetRatings. "Visitors to the site can follow the crew's progress and track the path of the shuttle in real-time, giving surfers an exclusive peek into space exploration.''

NASA is currently reviewing a report on its enterprise streaming capability. In January, NASA chief administrator Daniel Goldin addressed over 300 NASA employees in a webcast about the controversial NIAT report on recent Mars mission failures. Scientists at the NASA-Ames research center in Moffett Field, Calif., are reviewing the test-case videoconference as a model for the possible future deployment of an agency-wide enterprise network.
