Netflix Adds Big Picture Interface for Kid Viewers

Article Featured Image

Just because viewers are pre-literate doesn't mean they can't choose movies and shows on Netflix. While Netflix has been testing a large icon menu for kids for the past week, it formally unveiled the option today for all users.

Subscribers will now see a "Just for Kids" tab at the top of the Netflix homepage. That leads to a page full of content for the 12-and-under set, including shows featuring SpongeBob SquarePants and Dora the Explorer.

In making selections for the new section, Netflix got help from Common Sense Media, a non-profit that offers independent reviews for parents.

Netflix chose to design the kid-friendly menu because young people are among the service's biggest users. The company says that nearly half of its 25 million members in North America have streamed two or more kid programs or movies in the last 90 days.

"Kids discover and categorize movies and TV shows differently than adults," says Todd Yellin, Netflix's vice president of product innovation. "Just as we have revolutionized the way people find the movies and shows they want to watch when and how they want to, we're making it easier for kids and parents alike to have the best possible Netflix experience."
