Netflix Crosses 50M Subscriber Threshold During Q2 2014

How popular is Netflix? During a second-quarter earnings conference call yesterday, the company announced that it has over 50 million streaming subscribers around the world. That's up from 48 million at the end of the first quarter. Making that growth even more impressive is that the company passed the 50 million mark during a quarter when it raised the price for new subscribers to $8.99 per month. Netflix has 36 million customers in the United States.

Helping to drive the company's success is the original series "Orange Is the New Black." Netflix reports that the show's second season was its most-watched show in every territory in the month after it became available on June 6.

During the call, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings said the company would continue to push ahead with international expansion. Most of the international markets are growing faster than the U.S., added David Wells, Netflix's CFO.

Netflix will begin operations in France, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium, and Luxembourg in September. Hastings promised to create an original production in France.

Original projects currently underway at Netflix include "Daredevil" and three other comic-based series from Marvel Television, the third seasons of "House of Cards" and "Orange Is the New Black,"  "Marco Polo" which is in production in Kazakhstan and Malaysia, and a 2016 talk show staring Chelsea Handler.
