Netflix Partners with Nu Image/Millennium to Get First-Run Films
With the goal of bringing more first-run movies to its online streaming service, Netflix has signed a long-term agreement with Nu Image/Millennium films. While subscribers would certainly like to see the service expanded quickly, this deal will bring 5 to 10 movies per year to Netflix.
Nu Image and Millenium Films are known for their big budget action and thriller movies. Recent titles include The Expendables, "ohn Rambo, Brooklyn's Finest, Righteous Kill, 16 Blocks, and Black Dahlia.
Subscribers can look forward to viewing Son of No One, a 2011 crime drama starring Channing Tatum, Al Pacino, Katie Holmes, Tracy Morgan, Ray Liotta, and Juliette Binoche, which will be one of the first films covered by the deal. Another upcoming title is Elephant White, a 2011 film starring Djimon Hounsou and Kevin Bacon, about a contract killer who gets involved with white slave traders in Thailand.
Under the agreement, titles will be available for Netflix streaming a few months after their release on DVD. This puts them in the pay TV window, when films are usually licensed to premium TV channels.
"Avi Lerner and Nu Image have a remarkable track record of producing crowd pleasing and profitable films," says Ted Sarandos, chief content officer for Netflix. "Their ability to work across multiple studios and maintain a consistent output of diverse and successful films makes Avi and his company perfect Netflix partners for theatrical features in the pay TV window."
